The temple is part of the sacred Char Dham Yatra and is traditionally open only from April/May to October/November due to heavy snowfall in winter. The temple is believed to have been established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. Inside the temple, the main deity is a black stone idol of Lord Vishnu seated in a meditative posture.
